Neuropathy Causes & Symptoms

There are a variety of causes and names for peripheral neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy, chemotherapy induced neuropathy, nutritional deficiency neuropathy and idiopathic neuropathy are just a few. Aside from the most common cause, diabetes, it can be caused by other metabolic conditions such as herpes zoster infection, HIV-related infection, nutritional deficiencies, toxins and genetic and immune disorders. Compression of the nerves exiting the spine from compressed or herniated discs is another common cause of neuropathy. This is often called Sciatica.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include

  • Tingling
  • Pins and needles
  • Numbness
  • Loss of feeling
  • Balance problems
  • Chronic or acute pain
  • Burning sensation
  • Shooting pains
  • Extreme sensitivity to hot or cold

Neuropathy Causes

Metabolic – Diabetes

The most common metabolic cause of neuropathy and one of the biggest healthcare concerns is the US today is neuropathy coming from diabetes. In fact up to 60% of patients with Diabetes will eventually develop Neuropathy. The problem is growing steadily worse as this very concerning and prevalent disease affects more and more people at an earlier age.

Chemical – Chemotherapy, Alcoholism, Medical & Industrial Toxins

A large percentage of people who have undergone chemotherapy also develop peripheral neuropathy, as many of the chemicals aimed at killing cancer cells also damage peripheral nerves cells. Other common factors include previous exposure to industrial or war toxins, alcoholism and side effects of commonly prescribed prescription drugs.

Mechanical – Bulged, Herniated, Degenerated Discs, Failed Back Surgery & Sciatica

Next are the mechanical or compressive forms of neuropathy. These causes are also very common and most often result from mechanical joint problems that compress the nerves as they exit from the spine or are compressed inside other joints. Sciatica is the most common of the mechanical forms.

Sciatica is a form of neuropathy which causes pain and/or numbness in the back or leg(s); a condition that is caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve as it exits from the lower spine, usually due to disc bulges, disc herniations, mechanical misalignment of the vertebra, or because of disc degeneration.

Malnutrition Neuropathy

Malnutrition Neuropathy is caused by eating yourself sick; eating foods out of a box, bag or can. These foods are all dead foods – no live enzymes are present. This level of deficient nutrition is now prevalent in all the foods we consume today. It is completely lacking in live enzymes, vitamins and minerals, which are essential to healing the body and allowing it to function properly.

Restless Leg Syndrome – Commonly caused by compressive joint problems, poor circulation or nutritional deficiencies, Restless Leg Syndrome is another form of neuropathy.

Drug Damage

Myelin is a substance made chiefly of cholesterol and surrounds the nerve fiber much like the rubber coating that wraps around an electrical wire. When this coating erodes away, the nerves short-circuit, once again leading to the symptoms of peripheral sensory neuropathy. This is commonly found in people taking cholesterol lowering drugs known as Statins.
